Lessons from Science Teachers Available Online
08 June 2021
Researchers and professors Ana Simões (CIUHCT) and Ana Nunes (BioISI) present the project Lessons from Science Teachers/ Lições de Professores Cientistas, a digital repository of courses and notes from former professors (at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon), such as João Andrade e Silva, Noémio Macias Marques, José Vassalo Pereira, António Almeida Costa and José Sebastião e Silva.
These Lessons may interest not only former students of these professors who may remember their classes, but also "other colleagues, current students, the Faculty and other national institutions, and also students and historians in the Lusophone space".
The page is launched in the year that celebrates the 110th anniversary of Faculty of Sciences | ULisboa as a contribution to this celebration.
In an interview, the researchers talk about the project's objectives:
The first objective is to keep the memory of an important aspect of the history of Faculty of Sciences | ULisboa, and for this reason the scientific professors' courses are accompanied by a brief biographical note that frames the career of each author. These are generally paths linked to important groups in the respective specialties, and in which one can also read the articulation of the Faculty's history with that of contemporary international science.
(...)
We are also aware that, in addition to the memory that needs to be preserved, the courses thus rescued from oblivion will be indispensable sources for a history of ULisboa Sciences in times of democracy.
Ana Simões and Ana Nunes add that other lessons may emerge in the future:
Thus, we urge all colleagues who have texts in conditions to be disseminated under the same terms to contact us so that this project can be extended to all scientific areas of the Faculty.
