5th Luso-Brazilian Conference on the History of Tropical Medicine

The 5th Luso-Brazilian Meeting on the History of Tropical Medicine (5LBMHTM) will be held in Lisbon, on June 14-16, 2023, and on June 19-20, 2023, in Braga.
The congress will be organized by the Interuniversity Center for the History of Science and Technology (CIUHCT), the Landscapes, Heritage and Territory Laboratory/Associate Laboratory for Research and Innovation In Heritage, Arts, Sustainability And Territory (Lab2PT/ IN2PAST, University of Minho), The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT, NOVA), the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and Research on Emergencies in Public Health (NIESP/Fiocruz), and the Historical Museum/Department of Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo.
Following the previous congress, which focused on the discussion of planetary health on the United Nations Agenda, this meeting is a privileged moment to bring together national and foreign researchers in order to promote a forum for reflection and discussion on the concept of One Health, as a reflection of the most recent discussion on the COVID-19 pandemic. It brings together the history of medicine and public health, as well as social and environmental history in local and regional geographies and in different international, transnational and global contexts.
In the historiography of tropical medicine, the discourse associated with eradication or control programs for some diseases after World War II returns to the contemporary agenda with a particular emphasis on emerging, re-emerging and neglected diseases and their interaction with society. Thus, the technical-scientific collaboration networks and the different constellations of actors and social interests involved in the approach to planetary health allow us to reflect on the transnational ‘One Health’ program using the history of epidemics/pandemics as an anchor.
Therefore, this meeting aims to promote a broad reflection on the post-COVID-19 era. It will privilege reflections and work developed at the interface of human health with the environment (natural and social), in the light of the socio-economic and political-administrative peculiarities of each region and the correlations of power between markets, States/Nations and international agencies, such as the World Health Organization, the Pan-American Health Organization, and the United Nations, among others.
The Meeting’s program will include contributions on the following thematic areas:
- History of tropical diseases and epidemics
- Technological innovations in health and social impact
- Health and sustainability policies in the UN 2030 agenda
- History of human and animal medicine: interactions between environment and society
- Migratory movements, territorialities, inequalities and global health
- Neglected and re-emerging diseases
- Global health, planetary health, and One Health
The meeting will be held in English and in Portuguese.
Proposals for symposia or individual papers, resulting from original and unpublished research, should be submitted electronically in Portuguese and in English on the Meeting’s website by March 30, 2023, here: https://forms.gle/MqwcmrxGsMBTAWyg6
Each thematic symposium should have 4 or 5 participants. Each participant will have about 15-20 minutes to make their presentation, followed by a short period for debate or a final discussion.
Proposals must contain: Title; Author(s) name(s); Institutional affiliation; Email address; Thematic area; Abstract – up to 300 words; Keywords – up to 05; a short biographical note (up to 150 words) Each author may only submit one proposal as first author. The congress will be held in a hybrid meeting format (face-to-face/online). However, preference is given to face-to-face meeting.
Applicants will be notified about acceptance by April 28, 2023. The abstracts accepted for the meeting will be available online.
