New issue of Gardens and Landscapes of Portugal (vol.5): Ars therapeutica, hortus sanitatem

Gardens and Landscapes of Portugal has just published its fifth volume, focusing on gardens and therapy, organised by guest editors José Avelãs Nunes and Suryyia Manzoor.

In their introduction, José Avelãs Nunes and Suryyia Manzoor remind us of how gardens, considered as "spaces of safeness", came to have a positive impact on the sick, becoming part of non-drug treatments. The dossier includes approaches to gardens in different regional contexts — Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), Portugal (Greater Lisbon), and India (Himalayas):

• Inês Andrade, Notes on the therapeutic values of historic gardens in neoclassical hospitals in Rio de Janeiro (1830-1900)
• Ana Amora, The garden in the modern hospital architecture of the ‘Carioca School’ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
• José Avelãs Nunes, Beyond White Architecture: Therapeutic gardens for patients with tuberculosis in the sanatoria of the Greater Lisbon area (1870-1970)
• Suryyia Manzoor, The Ailing Gardens in India

The volume also includes two book reviews by the journal's editor in chief, Ana Duarte Rodrigues.

Gardens and Landscapes of Portugal was started in 2013, and has been published by Sciendo/DeGruyter since 2016, with the support of CIUHCT.
