Description
The project Laying down the Foundation Stone: 19th Century Geology in the Context of the Mining and Metals General Committee and the Geological Survey aims at studying the structure, organisation and scientific production of the various Geological Surveys, from the first created in the context of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon (1848-1858) to those created in the framework of the Geodesic Commission operating in context of the Ministry of Public Works, Trade and Industry, between 1857 and 1908. This research project focuses on the relationships between the geological surveys and the political, administrative and economical power structures, as well as the way in which they interacted with the scientific research carried out by the geologists working in these institutions.
