Resumo (em inglês)
This lecture draws on my recent book –The Empire of Contingency: How Portugal Entered the Indo-Persian World(University of Pennsylvania Press, 2024) – and addresses issues of circulation and contamination between two distinct political and cultural zones in the early modern period, namely Portuguese India and Persianate India. The focus is on the crowd of invisible, multicultural agents that have bridged between the two spheres, from runners and informants to scribes and interpreters.
