The first complete history of science, technology and medicine in Portugal
An unprecedented approach in Portuguese historiography, in four volumes, from the 15th century to the present
This collection presents, in four volumes, an original and current view of the relevance of science, technology and medicine in the construction of Portugal, from the medieval period to the present day. The aim is to make known to a diverse audience the best historical research in these areas, supplying the traditional alienation of Portuguese historiography in relation to national scientific contexts.

The third volume, Identidade e «Missão Civilizadora» (Séc. XIX), focuses on how science, technology and medicine influenced conceptions, decisions and political, economic and social actions, contributing to the construction of the identity of Portugal as a nation-state and colonial power between 1850, with the Regeneration, and the beginning of the 20th century.
